Dr. Mamdouh Shoukri, C.M., O.Ont., PhD, FCAE, P.Eng
President & Vice-Chancellor, York University

Theme of talk: The future of work and the role of universities

The changing nature of work is requiring universities to adopt a mission-driven research agenda rather than the traditional curiosity-driven approach. Increasingly, institutions of higher learning are focused on helping students develop their entrepreneurial skills and attitudes and build resilience and adaptiveness to be prepared for constantly evolving labour market conditions. At the same time, universities need to continue to be hubs of innovation, leading to new technologies and greater automation to fuel economic development. The future may belong to societies that can best harness the power of partnership between employers, universities and government.

Mamdouh Shoukri was appointed the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of York University on July 1, 2007. A champion of innovation, Dr. Shoukri has guided York’s transformation into a comprehensive and research-intensive university. Among his achievements as President are the establishment of the Lassonde School of Engineering and major capital development projects including a new Life Sciences Building, Glendon’s Centre of Excellence, Osgoode Hall expansion, the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium, a new home for the Lassonde School and the extension of the TTC subway to York's Keele campus. He has also overseen the advancement of York’s internationalization and social innovation agendas as well as plans for future growth in the York Region.

Moya Greene (LLB '78)
CEO Royal Mail Group

Theme of talk: Effect of innovation on the private sector - past and future evolution of the postal service

The Royal Mail is the world’s longest standing postal service. From the messenger boys on horses of the early days, the Royal Mail has had to evolve in order to remain ahead of the pack for centuries. Today is no different. Looking to the future, the Royal Mail must continue to innovate to secure long-term, sustainable efficiencies. In order to thrive, it must seek to be both a benefit to society and a beacon of optimal performance. To assist enterprises like the Royal Mail, universities have to become even more adept at fueling innovation, preparing citizens for leadership and contributing to the ongoing rejuvenation of  the labour force.

Moya Greene was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Royal Mail Group in July 2010.  She is a member of the Royal Mail Group Board of directors and also chairs the Chief Executive Committee, responsible for the management of the business and the development of the strategy.  Ms. Greene formerly sat on the boards of Tim Hortons Inc and Great West Life. Ms. Greene has a strong track record in strategic planning, complex negotiations and relationship building in the private sector. She also has a strong public sector background, developed over a 17-year period when she assumed progressively senior roles in seven different Ministries of the Canadian federal public service.
