Advancement at York leads and inspires meaningful engagement and philanthropic support from alumni and friends to advance the University’s mission.
The Division is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors as well as building mutually-beneficial relationships with alumni and many other members of the community. We are also deeply committed to building the reputation of York University as a leading, progressive, research intensive University uniquely positioned for the betterment of society in the 21st century.
Advancement represents the University at all times and is committed to the values outlined in the strategic planning documents of the University including the White Paper and the University Academic Plan 2015 – 2020. These include excellence, progressive, inclusivity and diversity, social justice and equity, and sustainability.

THE DIVISION OF ADVANCEMENT promotes York University’s teaching and research priorities by engaging our diverse community of alumni and friends to build long-term mutually-beneficial relationships and provide support to the university’s faculty and students.
The Division is comprised of three departments:
- Development: leads efforts to promote and secure philanthropic support and build meaningful relationships with alumni, donors, friends, and community members;
- Alumni Engagement: builds meaningful relationships and provides targeted programs and services to engage more than 300,000 York alumni worldwide in the life of the University and our students; and
- Advancement Services: manages ceremonial and institutional events, alumni and donor systems including research, data management, and gift processing along with finance, operations and HR for the Division.
